The German leader has been a guiding force in the eurozone through several recent crises.

This includes the financial crisis of 2008-2009 and the subsequent sovereign debt crisis in the eurozone that peaked around 2012.

It also includes the migration crisis of 2015-2016.

After the financial crisis of 2008-2009, Ms Merkel became a hate figure in Greece.

This is because she advocated for strict austerity measures to be imposed on Athens as a condition of international bailouts.
