Christchurch Airport, which is located on New Zealand’s south island, was evacuated after the item was found by police. A spokesperson from the force said: “An item of interest has been located at Christchurch Airport.”

They added: “Police were made aware around 8am (around 9pm GMT)

“The domestic terminal is in the process of being evacuated as a precaution.”

Reports suggest a bomb disposal unit arrived at the airport at around 9.15am.

Level one in the domestic terminal and the foodcourt are reported to have been evacuated.

According to the New Zealand Herald, flights are continuing to touch down in the Garden City.

This left hundreds of travellers standing outside the airport.

Lance, who was set to head back to Auckland, was affected by the evacuation and delay.

“We were upstairs in the Koru Lounge and there was an announcement to say evacuate the building immediately,” he said.

The Aviation Security Service informed 1News an officer on hand had identified the item as what appeared to be an improvised explosive device, commonly known as an IED.

However, a police spokesperson told the same news network it had not been a bomb threat.

Police are reported to be making further enquiries and are speaking to two individuals in relation to the incident.

According to the New Zealand Herald, flights are continuing to touch down in the Garden City.

At around 10.30am members of the public were allowed to re-enter Christchurch Airport.

The airport said on Twitter: “Several flights have been affected and several hundred passengers impacted.

“The terminal has re-opened and people are re-entering.”
